Did your truck accident result in a skull fracture?

Getting into a crash of any sort will automatically put your head, neck and back at risk. Unfortunately, the worse the crash, the higher the potential risk. Truck accidents tend to have large repercussions, and may even include skull fractures.

But how do truck crashes result in skull fractures? And what should you know about how skull fractures can impact your overall health and well-being?

Signs of a skull fracture

As Merck Manual points out, skull fractures present a health hazard in many ways. First, a skull fracture can have neurological impacts and will often manifest in severe and almost immediate symptoms such as:

  • Seizures
  • Partial or full paralysis in some or all limbs
  • Full body paralysis
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Profound confusion
  • Difficulty recognizing surroundings or people

Formation of bruising and swelling

On top of that, if you hit your head hard enough to fracture the skull, chances are high that you will also suffer from a concussion or cerebral contusion. Swelling often accompanies bruising, and if the brain swells enough with no medical interference, it may cut off blood supply to areas. This can result in cell death and long-lasting damage to the brain.

Skull fractures may occur if you take a blow to the head with enough force behind it, or if a weaker blow happens to land on a weaker part of the skull, such as a seam. Truck accidents thus have a high chance for skull fractures due to the weight, speed and size of the vehicle involved. Noticing symptoms that might indicate skull fractures such as those mentioned above should prompt immediate medical attention.
